What the NIL is going on?!
On June 31, 2021 the NCAA adopted a rule change that opened the door for student athletes to profit from their Name, Image, and Likeness (“NIL”). This has become increasingly critical to the success of college athletic programs as opportunities to leverage NIL can drastically change student-athlete’s collegiate experiences.
After less than two years, it’s projected that over $1 billion is going towards student-athletes in the form of NIL, with a vast majority going to those at universities with large revenue generating football and basketball programs. As a consequence, D1 lacrosse programs at universities with massive sports markets are gaining an unnatural competitive advantage.
The Hawks Lacrosse Association is working alongside our members, the Hawk Hill Alliance, and local businesses to promote more NIL opportunities for student-athletes of the SJU men’s lacrosse team.
